Make Money with Your Music Online?

A Fragmented Music Community: The Sum of the Parts Equals Less than the Whole - MTT - Music Think Tank

As a musician/composer, I've often wondered about why there aren't royalties paid out by all of these online radio stations the same way that the "traditional" (AM/FM) radio stations have to record and track all of the music that they play. I assume, that it is certainly at least possible (and plausible) to track all of the plays from all of the sites that let you stream them. The PRO's (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC) could probably try and come up with a way to collect royalties from all of these, or at least some, of these organizations (and require them to have blanket license's to stream each artists audio. Sites like reverbnation, bandcamp, etc, let you stream your tunes to potential buyers, but if they don't buy/download your album it hasn't done you much good (in terms of getting paid for people listening to your music). Make sure you affiliate with a PRO if you aren't, and register your compositions! Just in case something like this ever does come about... until then, check out this link to an article about someone that is trying to do just that...
